I know a lot of you will relate to this. My story is that I always wanted to work for myself but it took a LONG time for me to make it happen.
See, I had a good-paying corporate job as an HR Executive and although my dream was to be a coach, consultant, and writer, I didn’t know how to get from point A to point B.
I had the idea that I could really help companies who were in the middle of growth with their leadership and management training, and all the other infrastructure and efficiency issues that are part of growth, but I didn’t know how to get started.
Well…that’s not exactly true, is it?
Of course I knew what to do. I was a freaking BUSINESS EXPERT. My whole JOB was making businesses successful! But somehow, it felt way different operating as an employee (even as independent and self-directed as I was) than as a consultant.
You’ve heard the phrase ‘physician, heal thyself?’ In my case it was ‘coach, coach thyself’!
I actually started growing resentful of my job because of how I felt so tied down, constrained, and controlled.
Things finally came to a head, and I was faced with a choice of either keep doing the J-O-B thing and hating it, or see if consulting was everything I thought it would be.
I put myself out there as an HR Consultant, working with growing businesses going through growing pains.
And yes..it was scary, and I didn’t know what I was doing at first, and I felt like a kid playing dress up sometimes.
And it was AWESOME!
I got to work with some of the most amazing clients. Clients who were so grateful for the help I gave them.
And it dawned on me that me being a consultant wasn’t about me at all…at least, not all about me.
I have something of great value to bring. My consulting business has made a huge difference in a lot of companies, and by extension, many, many lives.
Talk about a legacy?
One of the things I love most about consulting with companies is KNOWING I’m making a difference. I’m making companies better, and I’m helping company owners love their companies again.
That feels freaking fantastic, believe me, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
That’s how I know I was meant to be an entrepreneur.
That being said, I’m also a coach and a connector, so naturally, I get super excited about helping other people step into their calling as coaches or consultants.
So here's my checklist for you to determine whether you're an entrepreneur at heart:
- Are you smart, hard-working, and passionate about bringing your best to your clients every day?
- Are you over the whole corporate thing, where you sacrifice way too much, for way too little?
- Have you always hoped there was more to life than what you’ve been taught to accept?
- Are you teachable? Really teachable?
- Are you okay with working hard for your results?
- Are you (or can you be) okay with financial uncertainty as you retrain your brain to stop thinking of someone else as your security and accept that you have everything you need to be successful?
